Mudroom
Martin Custom Construction designed and built a one-of-a kind paneled mudroom as an addition to an existing home. The interior millwork was built from trees cleared from this property. No plywood or veneers were used and the maple trees that were cleared turned out to be mostly spalted maple. Spalted maple is a result of a bacteria and fungus that causes black veining in the grain. The many unique features of this paneled room consist of a cathedral coffer ceiling with solid beaded wormy maple planking, a butcher- block bench with carved legs, carved curly maple shelf corbels, paneled skylight and door jambs, and a highly figured curly maple window seat. The window seat consists of solid 1-3/4” thick curly maple with wedged through tenons and carved sides. The wood finish is a dye to blend the colors of the spalting and give the room a very rich feel. It is finished with five coats of hand applied oil. Other noteworthy details of the room is large format porcelain tile flooring, radiant heating, and a copper drip pan and lighting.
