Exterior Historical Restoration

All inclusive design and building services were provided by Martin Custom Construction. The owners of this circa 1860 home requested their residence to be restored as close as possible to the details of the original construction. MCC worked as a liaison between the owners and the historical commission to specify suitable materials that would satisfy historical requirements and also bring the residence up to modern efficiency standards.

Unfortunately the existing construction had deteriorated to the point that it was not salvageable, so the owners decided to have all windows, trim work, and exterior claddings completely removed and replaced with new. The structure was assessed structurally and it was deemed appropriate to re-sheathe the entire home and MCC also designed a proper water management strategy for the updated home.

Martin Custom Construction designed and milled all trim work and designed a process that allowed a full window replacement from the outside that left the interior surfaces intact. Windows chosen were divided light wood Marvin windows that MCC outfitted with exterior hardwood custom sills and trim work. All trim used throughout the project was thermally modified poplar, which is a new and upcoming exterior material. Vertical grain western red cedar clapboards were used for the exterior siding material. Other features of the exterior included solid wood entry doors and thresholds, lead coated copper flashings and gutters, and custom wood storm windows.

In addition to the visible exterior renovations that were performed on this property, there were also other structural and mechanical improvements. The existing brick and stone foundation was replaced and the entire structure was outfitted with blown in insulation.
